Flange Lubrication

Flange Lubrication Systems – Friction Management for Fuel Savings and Noise Control

Flange lubrication systems deliver lubricant to wheel flanges to reduce friction, thereby increasing fuel efficiency and reducing noise. Spring-loaded applicators that are mounted to truck frames press lubrication sticks directly against the wheel flange, providing efficient and targeted lubrication without the waste and mess of oil-spray systems.

Applicators are fabricated in-house to fit a variety of different truck/bogie mounting systems.

Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I specify a flange lube applicator?

Snyder makes a series of applicators designed to fit the mounting holes on specific trucks/bogies. The most common ones are:

    Radial Trucks: SLB-7000, SLB-8000

    Pedestal Trucks:  SLB-5000

    Dash9 Trucks:  SLB-4450

    GE Steerable Trucks: SLB-4452

    Switcher Trucks: SLB-3500

    Clasp Brake Truck  SLB-3001

    Transit Applications:  SLB-2003

Snyder can fabricate custom applicators for other systems. Contact us with your needs. Please include a drawing of the truck/bogie and the available clearance.

  • What are the differences between sticks?

SLB-FLS-2000IL and 2005IL sticks are environmentally-friendly soy-based sticks for freight applications. They are designed for long-haul applications with minimum stops and are most suitable for disc braking systems. They fit in all applicators except the SLB-2003.

SLB-FLS-2000-K1 and K3 sticks are designed for transit systems and higher-temperature tread-braking applications. They fit in the SLB-2003 applicator.

K2 sticks are designed for trolley applications. K4 and K5 sticks are smaller sticks for specialized tread brake applications.

SLB-FLS-0500 and 1000 are molybdenum-based sticks for higher temperature applications.

  • What are the lubrication sticks dimensions?

  • How do I know when to reload the applicator?

All applicators have viewing windows or holes placed along the length of the applicator. When sticks are only visible in the last applicator window, it’s time to install new sticks.

  • How often should I change springs?

Snyder recommends changing springs every other time the cartridge is reloaded to get optimum performance.

  • How do I reload the applicator and/or change springs?

Click here for the procedure. (FL-INFO-1000)

  • How long do lubrication sticks last?

Stick life will vary based on the type of stick and operating conditions. In general, a full cartridge of sticks should last approximately 8000 miles.

  • What is a gap tool?

A gap tool contains surfaces with standard gap widths. It is used druing installation to set the proper gap between the applicator outlet and the flange. To order one, use the part number SLB-GAPTOOL.
